In Arabic, Eid means festival, celebration, or feast day. Renowned as the feast of sacrifice, the festivity honours the willingness of Ibrahim to sacrifice his son Ismail as an offering to Allah on his command. As he was about to sacrifice his son in the name of Allah, God gave him a lamb and told him to replace that in his son’s place. From that day, it became a tradition to sacrifice animals like goats, camels, and sheep, and more religiously on this occasion. Then the meat is distributed among the family, friends, and the poor and needy.
